5 Must-Watch Movies At MAMI Recommended By Chairperson Kiran Rao

The 17th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival begins today. Over the next few days, movie lovers will be spoilt for choice as the festival will celebrate the best of world cinema - Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi's Taxi, Yorgos Lanthimos' The Lobster (which won the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival 2015), David Guggenheim's He Named Me Malala, Lenny Abrahamson's Room...the list is long.

So which ones should be on your must-watch list? Well, who better to advise you on that, than the festival's Chairperson Kiran Rao herself!
We met Kiran for a quick chat amidst her busy schedule and asked her to list the films that she wouldn't want to miss. "I'm going to run around looking grumpy and there will be a very angry 4-year-old at home," she said good-naturedly, referring to her son Azad and added, "However, if at all I find the time, these are the films that I'd love to watch on the big screen."
1. Dheepan (France)

The film won the Palm D'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival and will be screening at MAMI on the second day. A story about three Sri Lankan refugees who are trying to rehabilitate themselves in France, the film has been unanimously praised and screened at several top-notch international film festivals. "It's right on the top of my list and should be on everyone else's too," Rao said.

2. The Boy And The World (Brazil)

Another festival favourite, this animated drama premiered at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and has been gathering accolades ever since for its hauntingly poetic visuals. "It is absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to catch this on the big screen," Rao said of the Ale Abreu directorial.

3. Blue (UK)

Made in 1993 by British filmmaker Derek Jarman, the entire film is set against a blue screen with voiceovers that form the narrative. It documents Jarman's final days before he died of AIDS. Rao calls the film something that has never been attempted in the past. She said, "It is a difficult film to watch but I hope people come to watch it because it really pushes the boundaries in terms of what is considered cinema."

4. Mountains May Depart (China)

The Chinese drama competed for the Palm D'Or but lost out to Dheepan. Rao called it an "essential viewing" at the festival. Other critics have hailed it as a film brimming with ambition as the filmmaker's "creativity evolves before our eyes."

5. Restored copies of Pyaasa and all Chetan Anand films (India)
